The history of

BRITANNIA SUPERFINE

Forged from six generations of passion and hardwork of the Manser family,
Britannia Superfine is today one of the Europe’s leading manufacturers
of chocolate products, fondants, sugar and chocolate based ingredients.
Let me tell you how it all began

1939

by Colin Manser
Managing Director

He founded ‘Robertson and Woodcock Ltdʼ.
Later he changed to a name that you may be more familiar with ‘Treborʼ
The company yielded rapid growth and owned a number of factories
in London, before expanding production further by introducing
‘Sharps Toffeeʼs of Maidstoneʼ.
This was later renamed ‘Trebor Sharpsʼ
and was eventually purchased by
the globally-recognised ‘Cadburysʼ.

My grandfather, Frederick Woodcock, and my uncle, Alfred Woodcock,
started here a small factory specialising in boiled sweets and candy rock.
Their main customer was actually
the well known high-street store ‘Woolworthsʼ.

1944

1950

My father married into the Woodcock name after meeting my mother, Valerie.
My grandfather Frederick Woodcock, my uncle Alfred Woodcock
and my father Kenneth Manser, combined the two families
into the confectionery business named
‘Barry Woodcock & Co.ʼ

I was very much involved in the manufacturing process
of all the sweets and candy that we made
working in the factory and learning the business from the ground-up
The company invested in additional machinery
to meet the ever-increasing demand of
hard candy and toffees in the UK

1973

Business started growing very rapidly
therefore we had to start investing into a second production site.

1977

1979

Not long after this, the company purchased
the first of its many chocolate refiners.

1983

I always had visions of
the company becoming a chocolate manufacturer

We branched out into more chocolate products and started delivering
liquid bulk chocolate and fragmented pieces worldwide,
via our privately owned transport fleet.

1986

It was at this time that I had decided it was time for a new name
and rebranded the business
‘Britannia Superfine Ltdʼ.

1987

Now, with five machines running 24/7 we are now selling Fondant
throughout Europe and we have become
the leading fondant manufacturer in the UK,
a title that we are extremely proud of.

Our confectionery skillset and industry knowledge has allowed us
to take a natural step into manufacturing inclusions
such as chocolate vermicelli, chocolate decorations, sugar strands, non-perils
, fudges, honeycomb, marshmallow or jelly sweets.

1988

2003

As the demand from our retail partners grew bigger and bigger,
we decided that was the perfect time for us to take Britannia
a step further into the chocolate industry.

This gives us now the flexibility to supply sugar and cocoa,
and enables us to supply all areas of the industry
with the facility of providing private label,
re-sealable bags, food services & sticks/sachets

2006

2014

All this to sustain the growth at Britannia Superfine,
we now own approximately 20 acres
with further room for expansion

Today

We are one of the largest home baking and value chocolate bar producers in the UK
suppling every major supermarket.
We employ over 100 staff and boast an excellent
team of managers with an impressive retention-rate.
